At a regular meeting of the Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce’s Governmental Affairs Committee, held on May 19, 2022, with a quorum of board members present, it was directed that the Livingston Parish Chamber offers the following statement.
Be it resolved that the Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce:
OPPOSES the inclusion of commercial property in the parish wide moratorium. Commercial development provides revenue streams to the very public services and infrastructure concerns noted.
Requests that a quick resolution, prior to the 60 day timeline, is reached to lift the moratorium.
Has concerns for the economic impact of this action and the potential disruption in the pipeline of projects in the parish.
Observes that small family landowners are impacted by this action as other factors such as rising interest rates make this a timely concern.
As the parish's business association formed to represent business, the Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce serves as a convener for leaders and influencers, a catalyst for business growth and a champion for stronger communities.
The Chamber is the largest business association in the parish representing employers of over 20,000 employees including the construction industry, the largest private industry parish wide.
The Chamber's mission and actions extend to the interest of community and initiates programs, projects and initiatives that collaborate and encourage corporate responsibility for better communities.
The Chamber is comprised business owners and employees who live in the parish and its communities having a vested interest in a smart growth approach.
The above statement in response to the
moratorium voted in by the Livingston Parish Council at the May 12, 2022 Council meeting, a 60 day moratorium, which includes commercial property, passed council approval and has been sent to the parish president’s office to sign. The moratorium halts the division of land for both residential and commercial developments for 60 days from the date signed within 10 days of it being presented unless there is a veto.
