Steve Scalise, U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 1st district since 2008, used his social media platform on September 30, 2025, to criticize Democratic lawmakers over an impending government shutdown.
In a post made at 12:43 a.m. UTC, Scalise stated, "Democrats have made it crystal clear: their number one priority is placating their radical base, NOT serving the American people. While they try to score political points by shutting down the goverment, hardworking Americans will pay the price."
Later that day at 5:27 p.m. UTC, Scalise reiterated his position in another message: "Hardworking American families are going to suffer because Democrats are shutting down the government in a desperate attempt to score political points with their radical base." In a separate but simultaneous post, he shared several links without additional commentary: "https://t.co/DAWP197yAa https://t.co/S8uQZUfSkc https://t.co/MXJs3BXf96 https://t.co/0ggOlKXsCp"
The remarks come as Congress faces a potential government shutdown amid ongoing partisan disagreements over federal spending and policy priorities. Shutdowns can result in furloughs for federal employees and interruptions of public services.
Scalise has been a member of Congress since replacing Bobby Jindal in 2008 and previously served in both chambers of the Louisiana legislature. He was born in New Orleans in 1965 and currently resides in Jefferson. Scalise holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University.
