Steve Scalise, U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 1st district since 2008, has posted a series of tweets on October 21, 2025, criticizing Democratic leadership over the ongoing government shutdown and accusing party leaders of prioritizing political interests over public welfare.
In a post made at 01:16 UTC, Scalise stated, "The Democrat Party has been hijacked by radicals, including communists and socialists. Chuck Schumer shut down YOUR government, inflicting real pain on the American people in a desperate attempt to win their approval. Enough is enough. End the shutdown."
Later that day, at 16:24 UTC, Scalise focused on Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia, writing, "Sen. Ossoff would rather cash in on MILLIONS from radical leftists than open the government and help tens of thousands of Georgia families. While Americans miss paychecks and struggle to make ends meet, Democrats are focused on appeasing the far-left and fundraising."
In a third tweet at 21:39 UTC, Scalise continued his criticism of Senate Democrats, stating, "Democrats know shutting down the government is wrong — but they’re too afraid of backlash from their radical base to end it. Millions of Americans are suffering while Senate Democrats cower in fear of their own party."
Scalise, who was born in New Orleans in 1965 and currently resides in Jefferson, has a long history in public service, having served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1996 to 2008 before his election to Congress. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University.
The current government shutdown has led to missed paychecks for federal workers and disrupted services for many Americans. Scalise's remarks reflect ongoing partisan disputes over the causes and solutions to the shutdown.
