Steve Scalise, U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 1st district since 2008, posted a series of statements on October 1, 2025, criticizing Democratic leaders for their role in the recent government shutdown.
In his first post, Scalise referenced previous Democratic opposition to government shutdowns: “Democrats in the past: ‘Shutdowns are dangerous. Shutdowns are disastrous.’ Democrats today: forcing a shutdown anyway.” (October 1, 2025)
Later that morning, Scalise claimed that Democrats were shutting down the government to secure healthcare benefits for undocumented immigrants: “ A Democrat leader just confirmed it: Democrats are shutting down the government to get free healthcare for illegal aliens.” (October 1, 2025)
By the afternoon, he labeled the situation as “Day 1 of the Schumer Shutdown,” stating: “@HouseGOP passed a clean CR to keep the government funded, but Democrats chose to placate their radical base and shut it down. Now, the nation will feel the negative impact of Democrats putting politics ahead of serving hardworking Americans.” (October 1, 2025)
Scalise has served in Congress since replacing Bobby Jindal in 2008 and previously held positions in both chambers of Louisiana’s state legislature. He was born in New Orleans in 1965 and is an alumnus of Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
