Steve Scalise, a U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 1st district since 2008, used his social media platform to comment on ongoing government shutdown negotiations and extend greetings for Yom Kippur.
On October 1, 2025, Scalise criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a post stating, "Chuck Schumer is holding YOUR government hostage to give ILLEGAL ALIENS free health care. Schumer needs to end his tantrum and reopen the government." Later that same day, Scalise posted a message marking the Jewish holy day: "Wishing all of our friends observing Yom Kippur a meaningful fast. May this holy day of reflection bring hope and renewal."
Continuing his criticism of Democratic leadership regarding the shutdown, Scalise wrote on October 2, 2025: "When Democrats had the chance to lead, they chose to shut YOUR government down. Now they’re desperate to blame someone else for the mess THEY made."
Scalise has served in Congress since replacing Bobby Jindal in 2008 and previously held positions in both the Louisiana House of Representatives and Senate. Born in New Orleans in 1965 and currently residing in Jefferson, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University.
