Steve Scalise, U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 1st district since 2008, has used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and recent political developments. In a series of posts between October 2 and October 4, 2025, Scalise criticized Senate Democrats and addressed concerns about political violence.

On October 2, Scalise posted: "Chuck Schumer clearly doesn’t care about the American people because he shut down the government. Democrats are leaving troops without pay, families stranded, and flood insurance frozen — all for a $200 BILLION giveaway to illegal aliens."

The following day, he continued his criticism of Senate Democrats with another post: "Senate Democrats will have YET ANOTHER opportunity to end the shutdown today. It’s past time they do the right thing for the American people: stop holding the federal government hostage and vote for the clean CR." This message called on lawmakers to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to reopen government operations.

On October 4, Scalise addressed an unrelated issue regarding conduct in public office: "There is no place for political violence in our society. Jay Jones has proven himself unfit to serve in office."

Scalise has represented Louisiana's 1st District in Congress since succeeding Bobby Jindal in 2008. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in both chambers of the Louisiana legislature from 1996 through early 2008. Born in New Orleans in 1965 and currently residing in Jefferson, Scalise holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University.
