Steve Scalise, U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 1st district since 2008, has used his social media platform to criticize Democrats over the recent government shutdown and related policy disputes.
On October 5, 2025, Scalise posted: "Don’t fall for the Democrat spin. @HouseGOP did our job and passed a clean CR. Democrats SHUT DOWN the government to push their radical agenda of: - Free, taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens - Cutting $50 billion from rural hospitals - $1.5 trillion in new spending"
The following day, on October 6, 2025, he wrote: "Democrats’ Shutdown = Troops unpaid Women & children in need without assistance Workers furloughed Families left in limbo"
Later that same day, Scalise continued his criticism with another post: "Democrats opened our borders, let millions in illegally, and now they’re holding the government hostage to fund FREE health care for illegal aliens. This madness has to end."
Scalise's comments reflect ongoing partisan tensions surrounding government funding negotiations and immigration policy. He has served in Congress since succeeding Bobby Jindal in 2008 and previously held seats in both chambers of the Louisiana legislature. Born in New Orleans in 1965 and currently residing in Jefferson, Scalise is an alumnus of Louisiana State University.
