Steve Scalise, U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 1st district since 2008 and a survivor of political violence, marked the anniversary of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in a series of tweets between July 13 and July 16, 2025. Scalise also commented on recent legislative developments and expressed criticism regarding Ireland’s proposed boycott law.
On July 13, Scalise referenced the previous year’s attack on Trump, stating: "One year ago today, President Trump survived an assassination attempt while fighting for the American people. He stood back up and kept fighting. As someone who has also survived political violence, I will never forget that moment. We thank God for sparing him so he can".
Two days later, Scalise addressed tax legislation in another post: "Democrats voted against the One Big Beautiful Bill — against bigger paychecks and for higher taxes. Republicans got it done anyway. Now YOU keep more of your money, and Washington keeps less." (July 15).
On July 16, Scalise criticized Ireland’s proposed boycott law targeting Israel: "Ireland’s proposed boycott law is misguided, blatantly anti-Semitic, and a threat to U.S.-Ireland relations. It undermines commercial ties and empowers efforts to delegitimize and demonize Israel. Ireland must reconsider."
Scalise has represented Louisiana’s 1st District in Congress since replacing Bobby Jindal in 2008. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in both the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1996 to 2008 and briefly in the Louisiana Senate in 2008. Born in New Orleans in 1965, Scalise currently resides in Jefferson and holds a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University.
